Remains of a building.
A wave of 1m to 3m high hit Padang,
capital of West Sumatra's shores.

A blur building during the tremor yesterday

NEWS on yesterday's EARTHQUAKE(edited):

Tremors were felt in many parts of Singapore after a powerful earthquake hit Indonesia yesterday evening.The undersea earthquake, which hit at 7.10pm (singapore time), struck in the sea some 100km south-west of the city of Bengkulu, the US geological survey said.
The national environment agency confirmed that the quake, which measured 8.4 on the Ritcher scale, was detected in South-West Sumatra, about 750km from Singapore. It lasted about 15minutes yesterday.
Tremors were felt in some places such sd Woodlands, Kallang, Keppel Road, Punggol, Sembawang and Orchard Road. The police said in a statement yesterday that buildings that experienced tremors were mostly in Clementi, Juurong, Orchard, Yishun and the Central Business District.
There is no reports of injuries or unlawful behaviour.

HOT!!!
Swaying buildings are actually safer!

Do not panic if you feel your building sway in a tremor. You are actually safer in a building that shakes a lot, said several building and civil engineers.
One structural engineer said:" When a building shakes during tremors, it gets rid of seismic energy that would otherwise build up." This makes it less vulnerable to collaspe than a non-shaking building.Buildings with more than 12 storeys sway more. But this also means they are safter than shorter buildings, which are often older and less flexible.
Irregularly shaped buildings, like L-shaped ones, are safer, as they have more support.
However do not be alarmed if you live or work in an older building. A civil engineer said older buildings usually have deeper foundations as they would drive the piles till they hit the bedrocks , even though it may not be necessary because they could not calculate the the friction so precisely. Better calculations nowaday means the foundations of newer buildings do not go as deep. Cracks are common after a series of tremors. All the 246 HDB, private and commercial buildings inspected were found to be safe.

The essential guide to 1e1 dummies=P

what to do when a tremor hits
remain calm,
If in a building,
* GET UNDER THE TABLE!!!
*Keep away from glass or hanging items
*Don't use the lift
*Don't use open flame, in case there is a gas leak.

If in the open,
STAY AWAY from overhead electrical cables and buildings.

AFTER the TREMORS,
*check for any visible signs of structural defects on buildings such as crack on walls, floors etc.
*Evacuate the building when only there is visible signs of structural defects.

If there are such signs, call the HDB essential maintanence service unit's 24hours hotline at 6275 5555 or 6354 3333.

Those in private buildings should call the Building and Construction Authority at 6325 7720 during office hours.
